Long term reliability
The average consumer may not immediately recognise the name Foodstuffs (Wellington) Co-operative Society Ltd. They are more familiar with the society's retail outlets New World Supermarkets, Pak'N'Save, Four Square and Write Price Food Barns.
Nor are most consumers overly concerned with the complexities of transporting high volumes of fast moving consumer goods. All they want to know is that when they next visit a New World Supermarket the goods that they want to buy will be on the shelf.
To ensure that this happens Foodstuffs (Wellington) operate a fleet of 47 heavy trucks, 21 of which are Nissan Diesels. Allan Quigley manages the Garage Division so plays a major role in the specification and purchase of new trucks. "Our Wellington based trucks cover an average of 60,000 km per year and our Palmerston North based units 90,000 km. In the grocery business turnover and customer service counts, but profit margins are tight. We cannot afford spare trucks waiting to cover for breakdowns but neither can we tolerate stock outs when the consumer calls to buy. That's why, when we are buying new trucks, the first thing that we look for is long term reliability. As no machine has ever been made by man that didn't need regular servicing we next look at the after sales back up.
Finally we look at the purchase price. Usually Nissan Diesels aren't the cheapest around, but one missed delivery or breakdown wipes out any small savings you might have made".
"When the Nissan Diesels go out in the morning we know they'll come home at night". « back |
